A registered Quantity Surveyor in Kenya must hold current registration with the Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors (BORAQS) and, in most cases, a valid practising licence.
For a senior freelance engagement, clients typically require: measured BOQs to CESMM or SMM7, tender documentation and analysis, interim payment certificates, variation valuations, and a final account with agreed retention release.
The most valuable QSs on freelance mandates also provide independent cost advice during design — challenging specifications early, when changes are cheap, rather than when concrete is already poured.
